As Roger has pointed out, changing one registry is not the same as changing a GPO. When you make a change in GPO it also makes multiple registry changes, and there is less of a chance of making a mistake.
GPO has always been more reliable. Also, a mistake in GPO is easier to fix than a mistake in registry. Sometimes, a mistake in the registry can seriously damage your PC.
